Love the quote from Arthur C. Clarke, "if a teacher can be replaced by a computer he should be replaced." I thought that really said a lot about the quality that is expected and going to be expected in the future! made me laugh. One of the interesting things was to see students step up to "fill the gap" of the teacher and lead the others. Same thing with the "grandmothers." At first I thought he was going to use them solely as encouragers, but it seems like their real role was beyond encouraging. They were interested in what the kids were doing and pushed them to do even more. This cooperative and collaborative learning environment seems key to the kids retaining it. Must be a social approach to get the information locked in there.
In a sense, this approach kind of reminded me of the book Ender's Game. The kids were doing all of this stuff without really realizing that they were doing it.
