I have been teaching high school math for 12 years now and even the older students feel like they need to be guided in most assignments like homework or classwork. If directions arent worded the way they are used to seeming them, if a math problem looks a little different than the example that was on the board my students freak out! I feel they memorize the steps on how to solve a problem because if I retest them a month later on the same stuff, its already forgotten.
I agree with what someone posted earlier, many students use the internet for recreation more than for learning.
