Samantha Power elaborates on the life of Sergio Vieira De Mello. Sergio was a UN diplomat who went head to head with many of the worlds most challenging issues.
The lessons of leadership learned through Sergio's include:
- Working with challenges by allowing yourself to understand the challenge before denouncing the challenge, while always staying true to your personal principles.
- When helping others work through their own challenges always exhibit dignity and compassion.
- When challenges do surface do not over react. Be compelled to be the problem solver.
- Be the change not just the person who suggest the change.
Sergio's life was devoted to extreme world challenges. His approach to aide through being a problem solver can be used daily as an educational leader. A leader recognizes people will disagree and in order to achieve a compromise, also realizes all persons should be heard. This tact will allow the leader to gain the trust of those involved. Leadership is not about pointing out problems but more about fixing what may not be working without pointing a finger at others or looking for the fingers of praise. A leader does not pass the buck, instead, finds a solution with the cooperation of others who believe.
