Elizabeth Harson:
Responding to Ken Robinson: Bring
on the learning revolution!
Ken Robinson states we have a “climate crisis” in
education. He believes we make poor use
of our talents and many go through life never really knowing what their real
talents may be or if they have one at all.
They are many people in their present job who don’t enjoy what they do
nor do they get any pleasure in it at all, they endure it and look forward to
the weekend. There are those who love
what they do and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. It isn’t what they do, it is who they
are.
Many think the education system needs to be reformed,
meaning the system is a broken model.
Robinson believes the system needs to be transformed into something
else.
In a nutshell, he believes the answer to the future is
creating a movement in education in which people develop their own solutions
based on a personalized curriculum. He
stated that we need to think of it as an organic process, recognizing you can’t
predict the outcome, but you can create the conditions under which thy will
begin to flourish.
I agree, in that we do have to create conditions for our
children to flourish. We have to nurture
them in a way that they will grow and make progress. I have been in education over 20 years, I don't necessarily think we need a total transformation, I pull from my experience and do what I believe to be the best way to teach and nurture my students in the learning process.
I agree with Ken Robinson that we have room for improvement. But, I'm not sure that a total transformation will solve all the problems of education.
ReplyDeleteWe can all remember all favorite teachers. They probably have something in common, their passion and love for learning. They provided the conditions that were just right for learning. Those things can't be produced in a total transformation of the educational system. Those characteristics come from people who truly love what they do and teach for the right reasons. Not just June and July!!
Neysa, We definitely can make improvements to the education system. Every school can think of ways to improve, but I am not sure a total transformation is necessary. Maybe improvements could also be made in the teacher training programs as well. I have had student teachers for about 10 years now and there were a few that did not get high marks at the end. I am not sure if it was the individuals or maybe the program. Just something to ponder on. Thanks for your thoughts. Liz
