Annelle Keller responding to Thomas Suarez - 12 year old Apple Developer

"Students know a little bit more than teachers when dealing with technology"
A quote directly from 12-year old Thomas Suarez is so true!  There are many times in my classroom when I need help with technology glitches and I have to ask certain students to help me.  It is amazing just how much our students know about technology.  Students today are begging Technology is such an excellent resource for teachers.  As educators, we should recognize this resource and make good use of it.  This 12-year old child has learned how to create his own "Apps" using iPhone development kits.  Basically, he taught himself how to create Apps and with his parent's backing began selling his Apps on iTunes.  Thomas Suarez also started a App Club at his school where students learn from him and each other on how to design Apps themselves.  Students becoming teachers by teaching each other - wow!

  1. Hi Annelle,
I enjoyed listening to Suarez' describe how he took charge of his own learning, so I was disappointed that his talk was so short. I thought it was funny how he was so matter-of-fact with his statement regarding students knowing more than teachers.

I immediately emailed the link of his talk to several of my co-workers feeling inspired by his ideas. I think his story is inspirational for students and for teachers on so many levels. He helps encourage the creative use of technology but more importantly I thought he represented young adolescent boys in a positive way.

  2. Hello Annelle,
I had to chuckle. Thomas Suarez is a poster child for technology with his ipad in hand speaking to an adult audience about iphone app programming. He is such a good example of the distance that has grown in the technology arena. Perhaps the silver lining in the technology issue is that it give teachers an opportunity to see students differently and if they are wise, to reestablish their relationship in a manner that benefits both parties.

  3. Thanks Rachel and Anne for responding!
I actually showed this TED to my Science club students at our last meeting. They were so impressed. Many of my students are much more tech-savvy than most adults. My students never cease to amaze me with regard to their knowledge of technology!
